I finally discovered a pool within 10 minutes of my house that has a 50 meter indoor pool, and the lanes are done horizontally at 25 yd, so there is plenty of room for swim teams, water aerobics, and other individual swimmers to use the pool at the same time! This has been a huge motivating factor now that there is a more flexible schedule to hit the pool.

I have done about 10 workouts in the last month. I will get into the specifics a bit more later. Once I get in "decent" shape, I plan to join a Masters swim team to meet other swimmers, for extra motivation, and for more intense workouts.

Just curious - has anyone been in the same situation? Is anyone else currently working on a comeback? I would love to hear your stories.

intro post

So...I have always felt I left a lot on the table after quitting swimming at age 17. My best and favorite event was the 100 yd free, and I did post a 47.6 in my last meet. I decided to put swimming to rest in 1999. Part of it was burn out after having been competing both short course and long course for 10 yrs, as well as deciding to focus on trying to get into a good college. Part of my rationale was that even if I swam in college, that would be the end of the line. At the time I was thinking it would be more important to get a good education, good job, etc...

9 years later.....I stand 6'5'' and am at 250 lbs...at my swimming peak I would stay at 180 and reach 200 in the off-season (remember how the offseason was only 2.5 weeks at best?!?!) Wonderful marriage and daughter, and another child on the way. I haven't lost the competetive spirit...and I have carried it into my career. I feel like I have reached a point where I am happy with my professional life, and can now focus on swimming. Don't get me wrong, work is more stressful than it has ever been, and I will be working more than ever in the next few months, plus we're expecting our 2nd child soon....but I still need to have another focus in life...

I have a few short term goals -- 1. lost the weight, 2. compete in the spring of 2009. My long term goals are to continue swimming, and hopefully post life-time bests in the next couple of years. I mainly wanted to start this blog so I can keep track of my day-to-day as I aim to reach the goals I have set, and hopefully inspire someone else to do the same. All comments are welcome. But for now...back to work.
